With healthy living as an ongoing trend, adults are more concerned with their teeth remaining strong and healthy well into their twilight years. Adults that have spent their life being unhappy with their smile may pose the question “are braces right for me”? In actuality, adult orthodontics has grown in popularity over the past several years, with many patients seeking treatment into their 50’s and 60’s. If you are in good health with strong bones and teeth, you should be eligible to undergo orthodontic treatment and have the smile that you have always wanted and deserve.
While orthodontic treatment doesn’t guarantee the health of your teeth, straight teeth are easier to clean, leading to healthy habits and longevity. After receiving orthodontic treatment, most adults continue to take better care of their oral health.
Many adults considering treatment wonder whether they are good candidates to receive orthodontic treatment. Patients with previous dental work no matter how extensive – are still candidates for orthodontic treatment, providing their periodontal status is healthy. We do many multi-disciplinary cases where we work with other specialties such as periodontists, oral surgeons and prosthodontists on these more difficult cases. Any periodontal disease or other gum disease also must be addressed to minimize the risk of bone loss or any damage to the soft tissues. If you are an adult with good overall oral health, with no major previous dental issues, then orthodontics is a definite possibility for you.
Some options outside of traditional metal braces for adults considering orthodontics are clear aligners – Invisalign – or porcelain brackets. Invisalign aligners are made of smooth plastic that is made to fit over your teeth and then changed every few weeks as your teeth shift. These can be a good option for adults with less severe alignment issues and for those that do not want obvious metal braces on their teeth. Porcelain braces are also less noticeable than metal brackets.
There are plenty of options for teeth alignment for adults interested obtaining a beautiful smile. Dr. Sandra Maduke and her partner Dr. Ryan Bulat can assist you by answering any of your concerns during a consultation appointment. Call our office to schedule 1-604-591-8621.
