That’s right, orthodontic appliances are not just for teenagers and adults. In many cases, children are the perfect patients as their teeth and jaws are developing. By using appliances at an early age, we can prevent greater problems as they get older. Fixing the problem early can be the best strategy.
Orthodontics for children is a critical part of their dental care and something that can take a variety of forms. Here is a quick explanation of some of the appliances that we could use to help children improve their dental health.
In growing patients, sometimes a little help is needed to make sure there is enough space in the jaw for all the teeth to develop properly. This appliance widens the upper jaw by putting very gentle pressure on the back molars.
These appliances are used with children who are developing overbites, ideally between 8 to 10 years of age. They restrict the forward growth of the upper jaw while encouraging the lower jaw to move forward. These removable appliances are normally used for 12 to 18 months.
This appliance is used with children who just can’t break the habit of thumb sucking, no matter how hard they try. We prefer to let the child stop by themselves, but sometimes a little help is necessary.
Sometimes braces are needed for children to help guide the development of their teeth and jaws. Luckily, braces these days are more comfortable than ever before and, just for the children, we offer coloured elastics to brighten up their smiles.
