Understanding your bite is a step in the right direction towards starting your [link url=http://www.myorthodontists.ca/guide.php]orthodontic treatment[/link]. Even if you did not have the luxury of braces as a child, braces for adults have become increasingly popular, especially with the various hidden options such as invisalign.
Here is a list of “bites” for you to better understand the alignment of your teeth.
A crossbite occurs when your upper or lower jaw is misaligned, or when individual or a group of teeth are out of position. In most cases, this causes one or more of your upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth. Crossbites can happen on both the front and/or the sides of the mouth, and are known to cause significant wear on teeth. Crossbites can also cause gum disease and bone loss.
An overbite occurs when your upper teeth overlap considerably with the lower teeth.
Overbites can lead to gum issues or irritation, and can even result in wear on the lower teeth. Overbites can usually be traced to genetics.
Occurs when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth, and is caused by the undergrowth of the upper jaw, overgrowth of the lower jaw, or both. An underbite can also be caused by missing upper teeth, which can prevent the normal function of front teeth. This in turn leads to tooth wear.
The good news – all off these “bites deficiencies” are treatable. If you suspect you or your child has a bite misalignment, we encourage you to come in for an exam as early as possible. By starting early, we can either prevent problems from occurring, or make future treatment simpler.
